Fit Technology Review: Beets BLU Smart Scale
Can you believe it’s almost 2016? I don’t know about you guys, but this year really flew by for me! I set a lot of goals for myself, and I hit more targets than I missed, so I would say I have had a pretty successful 2015. What I can’t say is how I managed to squeeze so much into such a whirlwind of a year!
As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve set some running resolutions for 2016. I really, really want to focus on dropping weight this year, and I have a game plan for that goal. Fortunately, I have plenty of tools to help me along the way. One tool that I recently acquired is this really awesome scale that I want to chat with you about today.
Let me preface this review by saying that I received this scale from Beets BLU for free in exchange for an honest review.
Okay, so now that that’s out of the way, let me tell you about this scale!
When I first took the Beets BLU Smart Scale out of the box, I was quite impressed. It is so lightweight and shiny! It’s easily the prettiest scale I’ve ever owned! It came with instructions in several languages, as well as the four AAA batteries needed to power the scale. Once I put in the batteries and set the scale to pounds (you can also set it to kilograms), I decided to take it for a spin.
Probably the most important thing to note about this scale is that downloading the app for the scale is the optimal way to use this product; however, downloading the app isn’t mandatory. You can weigh yourself normally without the app, you just won’t be able to see your BMI, body fat percentage, and weight over time.
The free app is available for download on both Google Play and the App Store. The supported devices (as of this post) are: iPhone 4S (and later); Samsung Galaxy S3 Neo, S4, S5; Nexus 4, 5, 7; HTC Droid DNA, HTC One (M8), HTC One X+; Motorola Moto G; Lg G2; Sony Xperia Z; Samsung Galaxy Note 3 – or generally any smartphone with Android 5.0 (and later) and Bluetooth 4.0.
To use the app, make sure that your Bluetooth is enabled, and step on the scale. The scale will beep once, and then a couple of seconds later it will beep again. Once you hear the second beep, you will know that you can step off the scale, and that all of your information will appear in the app.
I will note that I had just one issue with the app. (Well, maybe two, but the second one was a user error…) There are some typos in the app (I am speaking from my experience with the Android app), and I don’t know why, but they are driving me bonkers! Hopefully this will be addressed in the next app update, because it’s really the only complaint I have.
Issue number two-ish was that I accidentally had the app set up to state my information out loud, so that my phone shouted out, “you are 800 bazillion pounds, and your BMI is 903.” Okay, so I put that in quotes, and that’s not what it said, but you get the point. Needless to say, I quickly changed that setting after I regained consciousness in the bathroom.
All in all, this is a pretty sweet scale. I love that the app features a graph which shows you your weight, body fat, and BMI over time. I think it’s also great that, should you have multiple scale users in your home/office/studio, you don’t have to worry about the scale saving your weight for someone else to discover after you walk away. As long as the other users have the app, they can save their information separately, and on their own phone.
Right now, the Beets Blu scale is for sale on Amazon for $64.95 (it is normally $74.95). Just for Flecks of Lex readers, take an additional 20% off the Beets Blu Bluetooth Scale with the code RUNRES16. Hurry! Discount ends January 1, 2016!
