An Earth Day Challenge
This post is sponsored by Brita, but the content and opinions expressed here are my own.
At three indoor cycling classes a week, plus a minimum of two volleyball games a week, PLUS whatever other types of training (e.g. running!) I do each week, I drink a lot of water. Unfortunately, because I do not have the superhero ability to shoot potable water out of my fingers, that means that I have to bring water with me to my workouts.
If you’ve been following me here for a while, you know that I’m routinely making changes to lower my carbon footprint. I’ve been buying more sustainable clothing with earth-friendly dyes, I’ve been using cleaning products that are better for the environment and less toxic for my home, and I have been making a conscious effort to always keep reusable water bottles with me so that I can simply refill them.
Nevertheless, when I ran the Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Run recently, they were giving out those plastic bottled water bottles, and since I didn’t bring any water with me, and I definitely couldn’t finish the race without having water handy, I had to indulge.
I felt tremendous guilt.
Did you know that 2,000 plastic water bottles are used every second?! That’s crazy! But here’s what worse: By 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean. That is just so sad! But, it doesn’t have to be that terrible. We can each make changes in our lives to combat all of this plastic water bottle waste!
For starters, you can cut out the use of bottled water at home. At our home, we have a Brita Longlast that we keep at room temperature (I am not a huge fan of cold water, personally). I can just reuse a glass at home or use it to fill up my glass water bottle before my classes, games, or workouts. It’s great because the water tastes great, and the filter in the Brita Longlast is just that – longlasting! Those filters last for six months!
Another bonus: You can eliminate roughly 1,800 single-use plastic bottles in one year just by using your Brita!
Here’s a challenge for each of you on this Earth Day: Think of one way you can tweak your water consumption habits. How often do you consume water from single-use plastic bottles? Are there any ways you can cut back on that? Share some suggestions with me! I’m always looking for new ways to live a more eco-friendly life!
