What I Did This Week
Let me start by giving myself a pat on the back: I got in a LOT of fitness last week, and it felt GREAT!
Sunday: Coed Volleyball
I love my Sunday team. Seriously. We just have such a great time, and play some pretty good ball. I genuinely enjoy spending time with my teammates outside of the gym, and they’re just cool, good people. I would take a team like my Sunday team over a team that wins a lot but can’t stand each other any day. I’m too old to be miserable in my free time!
My shoulder has been feeling a lot better, so I’ve been practicing my overhand serve again, and managed to serve a few last week. I was sore from my tournament on Saturday, so I didn’t go overboard, but I’m hopeful! I’m debating whether I want to try out some yoga this upcoming week. My follow-up appointment with my sports orthopedist got pushed back a couple of weeks because he’s been sick, and I’m getting antsy. We’ll see how this week shapes out, and I’ll keep you guys posted.
Monday: Sprint Spin Class and a Tight Volleyball Game
I honestly don’t know what came over me, but I decided I was going to take a spin class before my volleyball game. I guess because I had a late game and wanted to kill some time and get some stress out? Who knows? Nevertheless, it worked out just fine. I crushed spin class and crushed volleyball Monday night, I tell ya. Now that my shoulder is feeling a million times better, I feel like my volleyball game is improving. I can set like normal again, and I can even serve like normal a little bit. Things are on the up and up!
With the spin class, I felt even more motivated to go ahead and suck it up and schedule my audition. The guy who was teaching the class is relatively new, and they gave him a shot, so why not me? Sadly, at the end of class, I learned where one of the other really good teachers was. He used to teach a Thursday class, and it was so fun! He always had good playlists and a packed class, and he would walk around the room and encourage everyone during the hard parts of class. I hadn’t seen his class offered in a while, and I was curious what happened. Had he just moved on? Instead, I learned something shocking: He had a heart attack! Nuts, right?! He survived, but from what I gathered, he’s in recovery. I hope he makes a full recovery. I can’t even imagine how off guard that must have caught him and his family. Man.
Tuesday: Rest Day!
At this point in the week, if I didn’t take a rest day, my legs might have actually fallen off. My lower body was not happy with me, plus I wasn’t feeling well. The weather has been uncharacteristically warm lately. It’s so weird! It started to feel like fall a couple of weeks ago, and then last week we were right back to summer! My body never responds well when the weather changes back and forth between hot and cold, so I was out of whack on Tuesday. Hooray, rest day!
Wednesday: Spin!
Maybe I’m getting addicted? I’m not sure, but I know that I thoroughly enjoyed it! I feel like spin is really helping me with my endurance for volleyball, and I started to notice that my legs are getting stronger and more muscular.
Thursday: Coed Volleyball
My final night of volleyball for the week, and my body was starting to feel it. At some point over the last week, I had jammed my index finger on my left hand, and I was definitely feeling it when I was setting on Thursday. Ouch!
After the game, I went with two of my teammates to grab ramen at my favorite local spot. We talked about food pretty much the entire meal, though we also spoke a little bit about college volleyball. Hooray, team bonding!
Friday: Sip N’ Spin
Okay, so this was a blast! My favorite instructor hosted a rooftop spin class that started at 5:30 and lasted an hour. We were wrapping up just as the sun was setting, and it was amazing! The weather was perfect, and the champagne and gift bags we received at the end of class were just the icing on the cake!
Saturday: Spin
Yeah, I did spin again. So what?! I’m just trying to get a lot of practice in and ideas for when I audition soon. I want to make sure I feel totally comfortable for this audition!
Sunday: Hiking and Coed Volleyball
Yesterday, I went for a hike with my girl Judy, followed by lunch (we hiked past brunch time, whomp whomp), followed by coed volleyball. It was a long day that resulted in over 30,000 steps logged on my Fitbit. Yikes! More on the hike at a later date, because I’m much too tired to recap it right now. 😛
Random thoughts:
Did you guys know that the activewear brand Lucy is going to be folded into the North Face brand, and is currently closing their brick-and-mortar stores? I only knew about Lucy because there’s a small store in a shopping center near my office, but they have cute stuff! Anyway, check them out if there’s one near you because you can get some cute, well-made pieces at a steep discount right now. I needed some new sports bras (I have had to retire 3 in the last week), and this was right on time! It didn’t help that I was really feeling myself thanks to all the spin and volleyball I’ve been doing, so I branched out and took a risk on some crop top sports bras. I did, however, buy myself a practical sports bra that I can wear for a variety of activities and is super cute. It says “Woman Up” on the band, so I just had to get it!
