It has been a few months since I was first introduced to Follain. I thought I was doing pretty well with natural skincare until I first found Follain’s Restricted Ingredients list, and it really changed the way that I shop for beauty products. I haven’t swapped out everything yet because, well, I don’t want to waste it, and that stuff was not cheap! Nonetheless, I really am transitioning to using only natural beauty and skincare products.
The first thing I started with was soap, and that’s been going on for a while now. All That Yazz soap really rocked my world, and I haven’t looked back since! It has worked wonders on my super sensitive skin, and it’s better for the environment. Body wash was something I used to have to buy frequently, so it was incredibly easy to phase that out. Plus, I wasn’t having any allergic reactions with this soap, so it was super important for me to make this transition permanent.
It was a while before I made the next skincare/beauty transition. I originally started with deodorant,
but as I shared, I had a lot of issues trying to transition, and am now fully back to my billionth attempt at sticking to natural deodorant. I think I finally found a couple of brands that I like, so fingers crossed that it works out this time!

My latest haul from Follain (though, my body brush is missing from this shot!) |
Now, I am starting to transition some of my regular skincare products and makeup. I don’t wear much makeup, so I thought it would be easy to start with some of my basics. I switched over my
lip products already, and that’s been working out pretty well! Next up was my blush. Again, I don’t wear it often, but when I do, I would like it to be a natural product. I picked up the
Ilia Multi-Stick for Lips + Cheeks (affiliate link) at the
Follain in Bethesda Row and swapped it out for my Tarte Cheek Stain. I love the color and the fact that it’s multipurpose. Bonus points for the Ilia brand because I have one of their lip colors, and I am in love with it!
Next up is going to be eyeshadow and mascara. This is probably the hardest because I have my go-to mascara which is the one makeup item I wear if I wear anything. It’s my trusty pal! I’ll be on the hunt for a good, natural mascara soon. If you all have any recommendations, please let me know!

My post-ORGAID mask shot. No filter, no edits, no problem! |
I did my first natural beauty sheet mask this evening, and it felt amazing! I couldn’t decide between the two masks I had, but after an
Instagram poll, I used my
ORGAID Greek Yogurt Nourishing sheet mask (affiliate link). It truly was nourishing, and the act of taking 30 minutes (okay, I definitely wore it for longer than that, which is not what they recommend on the packaging) to just chill out was definitely worth it. I really didn’t want to take the mask off, but it was starting to get a little weird with me sitting on my couch wearing this mask for way too long.
But Lex, I’m nervous about making this transition!
One of the things I think a lot of people worry about with natural products is whether they actually work. In fact, this is the main reason a lot of my friends have not switched over to natural deodorant, and why I went back to my regular brand. The short answer is if you find a good quality product – which can even be produced at home, believe it or not – it will do the trick! Better yet, they often won’t cause negative skin reactions for those of us with sensitive skin.
Another concern a lot of people have is that they won’t have a long shelf life. It’s true that some products don’t last as long as your regular brands, but you have to think of it this way: If something can last 24 months without any issues, do I really need to be slathering it all over my body? Think about the number of hardcore preservatives and other junk that’s hiding in the ingredient list! Further, if you haven’t run out after all of those months, did you really need that much of that product?
Are there reasons why you’re concerned about making the switch to natural beauty/skincare products? Please share them in the comments!
If you are interested in transitioning to natural skincare and beauty products, I recommend the phase-in approach. Pick something that you feel comfortable trying to replace, and ease into it from there. You could also transition by picking something that you’re getting ready to run out of, or even things that are giving you bad skin reactions (like I was having with soap). You don’t have to throw everything away all at once unless you’re ready to just go cold turkey! Find a brand you like and make sure your skin likes it too. Once you find success with that product, pick another one. And just like that, month over month, you will transition over to using only natural beauty products!
Now that I’ve shared my transition story, tell me about yours! Do you have any natural brands that you recommend? Anything you can’t live without?
What do you think would be the hardest thing for you to give up? For me, it’s going to be a tie between deodorant and mascara (when that day comes). What are you most looking forward to swapping out?
